You're doing something wrong then. The combination of the dip tube and sintered bronze filter in the first stage inlet should keep any debris out. They would have to be missing or the amount of crap in your tank excessive to allow debris into your reg.
Or just have had it rebuilt.

Then the rebuilder is doing it wrong. There should be no debris in a freshly rebuilt regulator.

Yep, shouldn't be.

Don't take my word for this, but I recall reading somewhere that having sand and other **** landing in the 2nd stage can cause them to freeflow (I guess by blocking the purge?). Having never thought that putting sand in my reg would be a great idea, I did not try

That will do it too.

I've had crap in my regs (mostly duckweed) and it causes wet breathing from stuff getting in the purge valves.

I'm stating the obvious here, but keeping your unused reg rotated so the mouthpiece faces downward, tends to reduce the chance of a free-flow.

Before, we start diving from his boat by ourselves (just the 2 of us)
This is a good thing to research here as well. Lots of posts about diving from a boat. There is concern about diving and leaving the boat unattended. Create a new thread if you have questions.
