In Pearl Harbor for a military dive club inflatable, I painted 3" registration letters NEATLY right on the hull and kept the annual stickers under an access plate on the transom next to the engine with the boat paperwork.
I got tired of replacing pulled off letter boards and the stick-on letters and annual stickers don't stay long on an active inflatable hull.
We never had an hassle from marine patrols - the boats were all open so you could see the sticker easily.

Having owned various Inflatable boats include my current RIB for 20+ years, paint is by far the best option. It lasts a long time and after 5 years or so you can just paint over it to bring the color back (I use blue to match the tube color).

Stick-on letters don't work to well, and while you can glue on the letters, these too will lift on the edges unless you are super careful and really don't look so good.

I too, keep my annual sticker on the transom.

Paint worked for me when I had a Zodiac.

Thanks for the help everyone. I ordered a set of glue on number plates from boatnumberplates.com.
