I have a question that maybe someone can help me answer.

What is the best reg for a youth to use?

I personally believe the smaller the better but that might not be the case. I am worried about jaw fatique with my boy and was wandering which model would be the best suited for a youth.

Thanks for any advice.

The Aqualung Mikron is said to be good for those with smaller mouths, and it's nice an light. Aqualung specifically market it as good for youths.

From their marketing :
"The reduced size and weight makes the Mikron the ideal choice for children and young adults"

ditto.....Aqualung also makes the "comfo-bite" mouthpiece which is wonderful for smaller mouths. My daugher was 12 and had braces when she got certified. This was the only mouthpiece she could use as her teeth were sensitive to pressure. The mouthpiece fits on both sides of top teeth so it isn't necessary to bite down constantly to hold it in place. I love it too and that is what I use. :D

beware of some smaller reg 2nd stages, they cause the bubbles to flow directly up over the face and eyes and kids hate it.

Oceanic had a line of youth gear for a while. One difference between that and the regular versions was shorter hoses.

Something to consider.

In my experience with students, a well fitting mouthpiece seems vastly more important than which regulator. Ditto Robin's recommendation to consider the comfo-bite.

I think the mouthpiece is more important than the regulator size. My boy uses my old MARES Ruby and likes it so well that he won't take a new regulator.

Get him a good full-size reg. He'll only be a kid for a few years, but a good reg will last until he collects Social Security. My favorite stage bottle reg (a SCUBAPRo Mk1) was built in the 60's and stgill works beautifully.

Second stages weigh almost nothing underwater, so unless the housing interferes with his vision or access to his nose pocket, there's no reason to get anything especially small.

If you're looking for something a little smaller than normal, but not something he'll outgrow in a couple of years, the Atomic Aquatics Z2 is a very nice reg. I use it all the time.

My daughter was certified at age 12 and has been using a regular ScubaPro MK25SA/S600 with an Atomic swivel hose and has had no problems whatsoever. She is now so she has been using it for two years.
