Hi Phil,

Here is what the manual says for the 50D, DS-IV & Flathead VI:

"Install the end cap (1) onto the diaphragm clamping ring (6). Use a clean rag to help grasp the end cap.

Tighten the end cap firmly. Use enough force so that the end cap cannot be loosened easily by hand.

On the Flathead-VI only, use the new Zeagle Pin Spanner (347-0003) to tighten the cap snuggly.

Use an old 1st Stage diaphram as a cushion under the spanner to prevent marks from being made on the enviornmental end cap."

So on models other than the Flathead VI, it is "hand tight", but on the Flahthead VI it is "snuggly" using the pin spanner (so, beyond hand tight, but not "gorilla" tight is how I interpret that :D ).

Be interesting to see what Jim Fox says.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, it is helpful.

Best wishes.

I bet that many people really hammer down on the spanner wrench. I have watched other technicians do this and they attempt to apply an amazing amount of torque to the clamp. I just never thought that is was necessary, and I know how difficult future dis-assembly can be if too much "umph" is put on the diaphragm.

From Jim Fox:

First of all, both the Diaphragm Clamping Ring and the Hydrostatic End Cap are made from the same material - Brass. Just the type of chrome used on each is different.

The two parts use different Pin Spanners because of their different diameters. You would put the Part # 347-0001 Pin Spanner into the Diaphragm Clamping Ring and the Part # 347-0003 Pin Spanner into the Hydrostatic Clamping Ring and turn them in a counter-clockwise direction so that they come apart.

We went through this same problem with some technicians trying to get the Apeks regulators apart.

Hope that helps some...

Thank you all guys, I'm going to talk to my tech again tomorrow and give him the copies, of your posts. I have also finally got original Zeagle spanners this Saturday, thanks to folks at Scuba Plus in Simcoe, ON and Jim aka Jimmer. So we will do the second attempt this week.

Glad to hear it, now that reg is all ready for ice diving season!

Good to hear you got it going Elan.

I just worked on another Flathead VI yesterday, and did not have any trouble removing the environmental end cap, so I think Phil was right on is his posts regarding the importance of not over-tightening the end cap during reassembly. I think the tendancy is for the tech to torque it down tight, when it only needs to be "snug" enough to make a good seal and not fall off

Best wishes.

Late to the party, as usual.

I just purchased a Zeagle DS-V. So, I know very little, but I've been reading and accumulating info.

I stumbled upon the photos below. I took them off a piece of Zeagle literature. The literature said to get some metal conduit, pound it down, slide it onto the Zeagle pin spanner and bolt the conduit to the pin spanner. Looks pretty handy.

My plumber used to call these 'cheater bars'.

....I hate pin spanners and whatever the tool is called to remove the MK5 and 10 seat retainer.
I have to give most manufacturers praise for the trend away from slots and holes and moving to the Allen key, reg design permitting.
