It's not a problem to me at all in fresh water--purge? I just exhale. In class, the only time I used the purge to clear was when they made us. I'd much prefer to just exhale :) I just don't want to be miserable in salt water. Other than this, I love the reg!!

Could be I let my mouth slip a little onthe mouthpiece or something a few times. .
That's a real possibility, and one that happens with me all the time. I guess I'm diving too relaxed, or lazy, or something and water dribbles in around both sides of the mouthpiece at times. It goes out with the next exhale.

From your description of first having a bit of air leaking when doing a dry land test, and then it being ok in the water, there is also the possibility that you just had some sand or salt crystals under the mushroom flapper of the exhaust valve, and either the water washed it out or helped it seal better. Many regs leak a bit of water past the exhaust valve, particularly in one position (usually either inverted or sometimes looking straight up to the surface).

One other possibility, and one that CAN cause major problems is either a tear in the diaphram or having the diaphram not quite properly placed. The reg tech can quickly pop off or unscrew the purge cover and check this, and also take a peek at the exhaust valve.

He just got his reg back from service and that is the most likely time for a problem. He should take it back to the shop to make sure everything is ok. There should be no charge for this.

good advice Red, I'll look into doing that. I'd like to take it on anther dive though, see if I can troubleshoot and find any specific things that make me notice water in the reg, such as looking up.

BTW, is the child in the avatar yours?

That's a picture of me! :D

A lot of regs breathe wet while looking up or inverted. If you bob around on the surface and let them dangle in the water, that can cause some wetness too. Purge it before you stick it in your mouth and descend. Don't wait too long to take it back to the shop if it still breathes wet.

I wasn't sure. It was B/W, but I prefer to shoot black and white film in my cameras, so figured it could be a picture of a daughter of yours. (it looks like a girl, and you have "pink pride" in your avatar....I'm guessing you are a girl?) But it could also mean it's an older picture of you.

If it still breathes wet, I'll take it to the shop. I had lots of little problems on that dive, it could have just been me overreacting to a little bit of moisture. My mask was flooding (never but never loan a mask to someone with a differently sized head and forget to adjust it before you dive), one of the valves on my BC seemed to have some crap in it or something, it was leaking just a little bit. Stopped as soon as I pulled it for a split second (dont' think it was overinflated though, becuase I was a little underweighted, I didn't have tha tmuch air in it). I was diving in a new place trying to follow my buddy and I was just happy that the reg worked. My memory about how wet it was could be off, so I hope to dive it again in a week or so and see.

I'm definitely a girl, JahJah. My grown up diving photo is in my profile. Pink Pride refers to Kimber (TekDiveGirl) who has been recovering from a dive accident, but it always in our thoughts.

I don't own a conshelf. A couple of times I've had a wet breath from a reg, one time when the 2nd stage body was cracked, the body was replaced. Another time when some sand was stuck in the 2nd stage diaphram, it just needed cleaning. Another time there was a small hole in the rubber mouthpiece. If there's nothing obvious you can't fix yourself take it in to your LDS.

And therein lies the beauty of these old brass regs - try getting a crack in the case! :D And besides, it sure cures dry mouth...

Oh, and Red, it is a nice picture! I like the way the aperture was left open, leaving the focus of the picture entirely on you. I think old photos from old SLRs are the best!
