What is the closest place to pt. lobos to get a nitrox refill? Is it reasonable to get a refill in between dives, or are you better off bringing all the tanks with you at the beginning of the day?

Closest place to get nitrox would be in Monterey. Monterey Bay Dive Center and Aquarius on Del Monte are the only shops that fill nitrox as far as i know. Both would be a bit of a drive from Lobos. It would probably be doable but i always just rent 2 tanks if i'm doing 2 dives. I like to relax after my first tank and get some water and maybe a sandwitch or something.

As far as I know, any of the dive shops in Monterey would be the closest. It's not too far - I'm guessing 10 miles?

I'd probably just rent however many additional tanks I needed, rather than go through the hassle of driving somewhere and waiting for what's likely to be a hot crappy fill. MBDC will rent you a full nitrox tank (steel, alum, DIN or yolk) for $10-15, which is just a few bucks more than the fill is going to cost you in the first place.

Aquarius Del Monte would be quicker than MBDC for three reasons.

While Aquarius is about a half mile further, it's almost all freeway.

MBDC has a rep for really slow fills.

On a busy day, Pt. Lobos reaches capacity and it's "one car out,
one car in". You can spend a half hour getting through the gate.

I'd recommend bringing all the gas you need.

Last I heard MBDC had an "overnight" policy for Nitrox fills. Rumor has it they will also only do Nitrox fills if they vis'd the tank. I just purchased enough tanks so I don't have to rely on shops down there for fills now that Manta is gone.

Aquarius banks 32 I think.

FWIW they bank 36.

I've gotten same day service on nitrox fills recently from MBDC, but it did take quite a while. Not sure about their fill policy, since they viz'd and O2 cleaned all my tanks.

If you go there to rent tanks for your lobos trip, they should have plenty of options in the 32-36 range, but it's a good idea to call ahead and have them set whatever you need aside for you. They seem to run out of steel/yolk nitrox tanks more often than anything else.

On Thursday and Friday, MBDC's turnaround on 3 high pressure nitrox fills was a little over an hour. They do a slow drain on the tanks, fill partially with 02 and top off with air, so it does take a while. It might end up being overnight if there is a heavy backlog.
