The reel is Halcyon Pathfinder 800. I want to get familiar with the reel, feel comfortable in operating the one. Before taking any penetration course I"m not doing any penetrations , we are just doing it in shallow open water to be familiar with it. IT's not a question now what should be used spool pr reel for deployment of an SMB, I regularly deploy the one with my spool.

What I might need it from time to time at this moment is having it as an ascent line in case of emergencies, setting a guideline in low vis. to be able to return back and lunch the SMB as alternative to a spool.

Damn thats a big ass reel. I think the best thing you might be able to do is to see if there is a cave/wreck diver in your area that would be able to show you proper tie offs, and things like that.

Not really big :) 50% wider than Pathfinder 400 :) hehe

I have a 400, and HAD an 800. Jeebus. My hand got fatigued working with the 8-hundy, and I found it hard to manage with my light. Didn't practice with it a whole lot, though.
