Well, Let's see. I'm not climbing with it, it is used like a trail of bread crumbs to leave a path. As you stated it's preferred for abrasion resistance, not tensile strength. #36 is used where there may some sharper edges. Braided is preferred over twisted, because it doesn't come undone. I would think anything smaller would be a little difficult to work with, the diameter of #24 is about the right size, to comfortably manipulate with gloves on and one hand. Most guides can accommodate the knots.

As for monitoring the depth, well it's a nice back-up that doesn't depend on batteries.;) If I have a zero viz or no mask situation I can feel the line and know what depth I'm at.

Oh, and the OP asked for a simple way to measure distance.:D

Jason Ooi:
knots will be a weak point on the line, you can monitor depth by your depth gauge or computer

It's horizontal penetration Jason :D

Packhorse:
How about a bit of cotton/nylon tied around it or threaded tru it instead of knots?
I tried a vivid marker but that soon washed off asfer 10 or so dives.
In a siltout you wont be able to see the thread though like he said, with my partner I think the knots are best:) (ok ok its me that silts too)

how about getting some liquid dip or liquid electrical tape. the liquid dip makes a replacement handle on wrench's. there's several colors and the stuff lasts. still has some flexibility when cured. You can find both at hardware stores.
sorry don't know of a link.

Sorry! miss read:D

Thanks for the suggestion offroaddiver we thought of things like that but like I said with my partners a full cave environment can come right out of the clear blue sky so I think I like the knots option best (for feel). I spoke with our other instructor, he said he just ties a knot every 50', so I guess I'll go the knot route.
