I have 1 knot at 6m and 2 knots at 3m to be able to do deco stops in case of loss of vision. It’s a very unlikely scenario but it doesn’t cost much to add those to the line for my DSMB.

Could be useful when there's a mask issue and a deco obligation. However, my backup mask and teammate is a better solution. I don't see the need for knots in OW.

They could be useful on the safety spools when cave diving (and the exploration reel, of course).

So you knot your exploration reels?

Knots every 10’ or 3m for *cave exploration*. It’s part of how the survey is done.

I don’t put knots in anything else but I don’t hate the idea of a knot at 20 and a knot at 70 for DSMB spool. I do think it’s highly unlikely that I’ll lose my mask, backup mask, buddy, AND I can’t make out any numbers on my computer.

Do we knot every 3 meter for all our reels? Or spools?

Why and why not? Any reason not to? Or should i standardize everything and knot every 3m
Yes but I'm using them all for cave diving at some point. If I wasnt a cave diver I wouldnt bother

Personally, I have three knots at 30', 2 knots at 20' and 1 knot at 10' on the spool I use with my DSMB. It isn't necessary at all, I haven't ever managed to lose multiple masks, buddie's spare masks, and the mooring line all on the same dive. I have practiced launching and ascending blind just using the knots, but it is more just something to do at the end of a benign dive. None of my reels have any knotting, I don't do any survey or exploration where I need to know exact distance underwater.

Outside of cave survey, especially in open water diving, I think it’s one of those gimmicks that appear clever but probably wouldn’t work.

I did put knots on one of my reels reel in the past when I started techie diving because I thought I might need to do deco with no sight. I haven’t used that specific reel for few years and forgot about the knots. Last year, I decided to use it, which led to a rather interesting moment when one of the knots snagged and I had to hold onto a wreck with a half-deployed DSMB and 40 minutes of deco as my dignity didn’t let me to let the reel go. I promptly replaced the line and there are no knots on any of my reels anymore.

I have knots on my backup spool/DSMB every 3 meters, not sure if the knots would at all.

Someone I know who is actually almost blind relies on computer buzzing and flashing - slowly go up until you get above your ceiling and the computer gets angry, go a little down, wait for few minutes, repeat.

Also, you can always see your computer just a little - and switching to a backup mask is probably a better plan as you cannot switch gasses blind.
