Terry,

I highly recommend these three books--take a look at them even if the titles might not seem relevant. Many dive shops have the first two on their book shelves...

(1) Jim Church's Essential Guide to Nikonos Systems.

Even though the book takes you though the Nikonos system, it also explains about u/w photography in general. You will get a good introduction to the principles that govern u/w photography. It will give a good intro to strobes, for example.

(2) Martin Edge's The Underwater Photographer.

This is my favorite! The photos, alone, are worth the price. It is a little more imposing than Church's book, but I think it is very readable.

(3) National Geographic Photographer's Field Guide.

Now you will get some idea about how long of tooth I am! My copy was printed in 1981 and I have had it since it was new! I am not sure this is in print anymore, either. It is a great primer on photograpy in general. If you do not now know the relationship between f-stop and depth of field, it will teach you. It is a general book with a small section on u/w photography. I love it.

If it is not in print any longer, try some used book stores or http://www.alibris.com to see if they can secure a copy for you.

Have fun with your camera--I think it adds a wonderful dimension to scuba!

Joewr
