Hi all--it looks like I'm gonna be visiting family in San Diego for the winter holidays... While I certainly love my folks and all--I strongly suspect I'll need to get some time away, and wanted to know what the diving will be like down there... Any suggestions, recommendations? I might be there as long as a week, so a little 2/3day trip might be in the cards... Are there kelp forests that fr south? Any must sees? Thanks!

Don't miss the opportunity to dive the Yukon, or Ruby E - two great wrecks. You can get charters that will visit both wrecks on the same trip, and they are only 15 minutes from the dock. If you're not wreck certified, there's just as much stuff to see on the outside of them as the inside.

I'm heading to San Diego on business in November, and so this thread is quite timely. I checked out the URLs listed above, and some of the dive operations linked from there run DAILY trips to the Corondao Islands and the Yukon and Ruby wrecks.

Needless to say, I'm thinking of taking an extra day on this trip, booking a charter, and bringing my reg along !

Thanks for the info!

...on what kind of water temps, visibility etc to expect in this area during the winter months?

I've been out of the water a month and need to get back in - looking for somewhere to go! Kelp forests sound cool!

that I can't say, but I can tell you that in mid-October at about 75 FSW on the Yukon, I got a reading of 53F.

Well, looks like I'll be hauling some gear around with me! The sites look great! Definately planning on getting in a day trip or two... Does anyone know the local dive club scene and if I could find someone to show me the shore dives?

you can also get a ride out to catalina without too much difficulty.

the water in SD will be cold, low 50's I'd imagine. But there will definitely be kelp here.

anybody know when the squid usually start spawning? that's one of the coolest dives in san diego but it only happens for a week or two during the coldest part of the winter. :D

anywho, have fun here in SD!
