We have to stay overnight in San Juan PR on the way to and from Dominica.

Hotels look expensive there, and I'm told they are not very nice.

Has anyone stayed at the Holiday Inn San Juan ($156) that is 3 minutes from the airport?

How about the Howard Johnson ($99) that is 5 minutes from the airport?

I'll be traveling with a 15 year so looking for something clean and safe, and hopefully within walking distance of something interesting for our two overnight stays.

Thanks for any input.

We stayed at the Howard Johnson in old San Juan - it is OK & right in the middle of things.

Whenever my wife and I have to stay over in PR we stay for about $65-$75 a night. Here is the number 1-787-726-8662. Cannot remeber the name but the room we get has 2 beds a small fridge and a 2 burner stove. Clean and shuttle runs $5-$10 and is 5 minutes from airport. Gates are locked and require exit from management so it is safe and it has been clean just small. They do have a pool.

Found it..http://www.coqui-inn.com/caribbeanshopping.html

It's been a couple of years, but stayed at the El San Juan Hotel.
Close to the airport and very nice.
Not much around the area. Taxi into town is better option (about 15 minutes).
Nice beach. Great pool.

Howard Johnson is in Isla Verde, on the corner of the freeway exit ramp. Might be noisy. You might want to try the Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites, InterContinental, or the Wyndam, also in Isla Verde. All safe, all clean. You will find it hard to get something cheap that is nice and clean in safe area. Isla Verde is a nice stretch of beach. Don't walk on the beach at night though (there is a reason it's empty at night!).

Embassy Suites has a casino that is open in the evenings as well.

The Metropole (virtually next to the Hampton Inn) has great Cuban food. Skip the Mexican food place across from Hampton Inn. There is a great Argentine Restaurant at the end of Isla Verde, can't remember the name but hotel staff will know.

You can rent beach chairs and hang on the beach in Isla Verde during the day. They also rent jet skis there as well.

The Wyndam has some nice cheaper quick eat restaurants in their inside promenade, pizza, etc.

If you stay in Old San Juan, try El Convente. Right across the street is the church where Ponce De Leon is entombed along with some other Saints. You can also explore the old forts on the cliffs overlooking the ocean.

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback folks!
