I quite like my used Sartek 10W HID can light and my to El Cheapo mini Q40 LED backups. The goodman handles on the HID light head is really handy. I can't imagine going without it!

I just went through the same decision. I decided on a Princetec Miniwave LED. Found that LP was selling it for $89.95 with free shipping a a free Tec 40, so I called up ScubaToys and they matched the price. All should be her next week.

In the techie world of primary lights of course we're talking canister lights w/goodman handle. In the non-techie world of diving - a "primary" light has to start with something like a 9 watt LED...at least to me. I'm most familiar with the Princeton Shockwave LED ( Princeton tec Miniwave LED has the same light head with 4 c-cells instead of 8 so shorter burn time with the same output) and absolutely love it. I think in the category (lumens, price, quality) its the best - I think you'll find most independent reviewers agree. I also like the Princeton tec XL LED 1 watt for back up with the exception that they are twist on but the rubber outer twist ring seperates from the plastic housing (sorry for the terminology) ..making the light difficult to turn on as it just slips and then also difficult to turn off. Otherwise quite a light in brightness and length of burn!

buy a canister light! you'll end up buying a ton of lights and never be satisfied... and once you dive with a canister light, you'll never go back to handhelds...! i have two dive rite cannister lights! 8 hour burn times, rechargeable, and 10watts power, effective 25watt...

i use 4-C UK for backup....

I'm a can light guy, but if you're determined to stay within the rec realm, it's hard to go wrong with UK.

I can't quite bring myself to recommend Princeton Tec. I've just seen too many of their lights flood. They were all cheerfully replaced, but I'd rather a UK light that didn't have to be replaced in the first place. (And should you manage to flood it through actual effort, UK will replace it just as cheerfully.)

The 8-C LED lights throw out enough light for the Southern California diving that I do. The only noticeable difference from my experience is that the Princeton Tec "lock-out" mechanism is much more robust than the fragile UK one. Check out the difference for yourself in a side-by-side comparison. I own both a Princeton Tec Shockwave LED and a UK C8 eLED. I never had any problems with flooding with either light. A set of regular alkaline batteries last about 10 night dives for me with these lights. At battery change time, I remove the o-rings, re-lube them with silicone grease, clean the grooves, and replace the batteries. I rinse them in fresh water after each dive. IMHO, both lights are very low maintenance.
