Ok. My old thread was gone due to SB crash...

I have only used a shelf battery, 1.5v. And, I put some 1.2 AA rechargable batteries on my Canon A570is.

It shows "change the battery" text and automatically shut off.

Does a Canon camera only take a shelf battery, 1.5v.?

no idea on your question per se, but you may want to check Canon's firmware updates online. I know my camera had issues with non-Canon batteries and then I did the firmware update and viola...

Really....

I didn't know that there is a feature of firmware update on the camera....

I only use rechargeable in my A620. Are the batteries fully charged? While the nominal voltage of a NiMH battery is 1.2, a freshly charged battery should be closer to 1.4. NiMH have a high self-discharge rate, so if you haven't charged them in the last month then they probably need to be charged.

Yes, it is fully charged... I was a kind of surprised at this fact last night.

I have a bunch of rechargable battery for the dive lights (AA, AAA, and C-size). But, there is no hope yet... It mgiht be a firmware as Scubapatton said.

I never heard that there is a firmware update feasture on camera. I feel like being behind the world.... ;(

I did not see Firmware options available, but there is a software upgrade (if you do not have that one. You may need to try and recharge the batteries overnight and see if you have this issue. I do also remember the beloved Olympus SP-350 having a similar battery issue and the firmware eventually came out. You could try calling Canon and see what they say....

I have an older Canon S230 that I use above and below. I recently did the firmware update on mine - REAL simple... download software to desktop, then just plug in memory card and save the file to card. Then install into camera and on Menu there is an option to "Update Firmware" I think it is... Then runs through real quick. Then you can re-format the card and viola...

I believe you.. I just feel like being cast away from the modern technology.. LOL~~~

Lol. I sent the link more for your info, not to reassure you or strengthen my claim..

I am actually happy we can firmware things like this.. at least it makes those pricey purchases amendable.

I just got the A710is and although I haven't gotten it wet yet, while playing with it on land, I am surprised at how well it is doing using "regular" rechargeable batteries compared to my old Ricoh. I try not to leave the screen on for any length of time, and I have also noticed that I get much better results while using 2500mAH batteries instead of the old 2300's that I had. I also just bought a set op 2700's and will see if they make more of a difference.
After charging your old batteries, make sure they read at least 1.350 volts- any less and they are not taking enough charge, and may be bad.
