I used warm water but not hot water. Hot water might be even better in that it will soften the lens and help it conform. However my approach was to submerge the entire mask to eliminate any change of trapped air. If the water was too hot that would be difficult.
Either way the key to success is:
- proper positioning (and trimming as necessary)
- elimination of all air between mask and lens
- complete dry after adhering (absolute minimum 24 hours)
