I have seen some posts referring to the difference in philosophy between GUE and UTD regarding decompression calculations. From what I understand GUE uses DecoPlanner while UTD uses ratio decompression.

First, is this understanding correct? If it is not please correct me. If it is true, what is the difference? Even though I am really far from needing this, I am curious about what it all means for rec diving and tec diving.

Perhaps someone could direct me to more extensive written reference instead of having to write a lengthy explanation here (although that is welcome here too).

Thanks for any help in advance :)

That understanding is incorrect. GUE does encourage students in class and out of class to play with profiles in software to better understand how RD profiles are generated and to get a sense of where RD breaks down. Choice of decompression tool (RD vs. software) is left to the student after class. For experience dives, we used only RD in my GUE and UTD "technical" diving classes.

Various forms of RD (s-shaped, linear, the new "lots of time at O2-window then linear") have been / are being taught by GUE, while UTD retains the s-shaped form.

OK cool. Thanks for setting me straight :D

For recreational diving, the bottom line is that we don't race up to 15ft and do 3min safety stops.

Recreational ascents do 1min stops from 50% of depth. E.g. from 90ft you'd take roughly 2mins to ascend from 90 to 40ft and then do 1min each at 40,30,20,10 at a minimum. This is referred to as a "minimum deco" ascent as all dives at some level are decompression dives.

Its only $75 and will explain the whole system including recreational through 250ft+ trimix profiles. This doesn't certify you for anything though, only dive within your existing training.
