Good idea. I bent an aluminum one before. When I tried to straightening it ended up breaking it.
Believe it or not, I bought a great heavy duty SS pointer off the t-shirt guys in Tulamben. It's simply one piece of steel with a rounded end, which I attach one end of a double-end bolt snap. If I recall, it was IDR 100-150k. A great piece of kit :)

I used to have one of those. I went through may be 9 to 10 of pointers with various design & materials of construction in search of a good one and ended up with the one I posted above.

The problem with yours is it doesn’t have a hand grip. The rounded end helps a little, but it is still uncomfortably poking my palm when I jab its pointy end into a crevice. After an hour in the water your hands would get soft and prone to get beat up & easily scratch, cut, bruise, etc.

My buddy’s pointer is like yours. To make it less poky on his palm, he cut up an old tennis ball (he’s also a tennis player) a hole on top and a slit on the bottom to cover the rounded end, simulating a “homemade” hand grip.

My new one from Amazon has molded plastic handle with curve end which makes it ergonomically easy to hold it and it won’t poke onto my palm when I jab its pointy end into a crevice.

Titanium is also a good option. We got ours off Amazon. Tulamben consistently has good options right by the Liberty wreck, as you mentioned. I left my aluminum ones behind after some wild Indonesian currents put it in its place. :)

Another argument in favor for my use of gloves :)

I bought two from the guys in Banga.
One has taken a walkabout.
I'd love to get another, as now I'm needing a new spare. 😉 I like them because they're longer than norm too.

Who did you say that you bought it from in Tulamben?

A diver dies on a dive where others barely make it out of the water alive....

Let's all talk about our pointer sticks.
I did not read through all 12 pages to know this. Sorry about that. I was just sharing my experiences based on the parts I did read.

I just went diving into the thread looking for it and found it. I understand your sentiment and agree with it but let’s not assume that everyone saw it and is just not GAF because that is not me. I appreciate the heads up on it.

So sad for his family and for those to have to witness it. RIP.

This thread is a trip report and will spin off other subtopics.

It's far more crucial that the Accidents and Incidents thread doesn't spin off minor subtopics.
