Has anybody dove with Rainbow Reef Divers out of Key Largo?

My wife and I are looking to go down over the winter and take our AOW class and were thinking about booking with them.. Looking at the begining of February as our time frame, and wanted to book soon, as the prices look good..

I sorta dove with them in 2002..... said "sorta" because they were Sharky's then, not Rainbow Reef.

In or after 2002, they were either named "Sharky's" or they bought out "Sharky's" or took over them after "Sharkys" went out of business. I'm not real sure exactly what happened or how it happened, but they changed names then. They also changed boats at some time also, but it's in the same slip at the Holiday Inn that Sharky's was. (I saw their boat there this past July also). But if you called the old Sharkys phone number it rang at Rainbow Reef afterwards.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in 2002 when there and it was nice since they were in the marina at the hotel. They are actually on the other side of the canal, but it only adds maybe about 50 yards more walk.

Sorry though but I can't say how'd they be now since they've changed names, boats, and people working there since 2002.

Can't tell you about them, but I can tell you that my favorites in KL are Ocean Divers and Scuba Do. I'd be happy to tell you more if you wish.

I did my PADI AOW and Nitrox certification with Rainbow Reef last November. I chose them primarily because their website looked good. Because it was off season, all their boats went out of their main location, which is in Islamorada, about 15 minutes south of the Key Largo location. I wish they had told me that ahead of time, because I would have stayed in Islamorada rather than Key Largo and saved the 15 minute commute! I found them to be friendly, competant, and reliable, however, their instruction was perhaps not as comprehensive and as detailed as I would have expected. I read the AOW and Nitrox textbooks, answered the AOW chapter questions and took a 2 page Nitrox test, which was reviewed by the instructor and discussed with me. I went on a handful of dives with the instructor, during which no instruction took place, although I was supervised as I did some underwater navigation drills which is required for the AOW certification, and was shown how to analyze nitrox tanks. So, as long as you are not expecting a lot of supervision, classroom instruction, and underwater skills training, you should be ok.

Prices are good at that time of year since it's their low season. Also, the water is a bit colder too.

dove with them 4 times in july of this year and several times last year up to november very good operation some times boat can be crowded. early in the year should not be a problem as the natives think it too cold for diving. I also dove with another boat out of deerfield which was awesome pm me for names and numbers if interested.

i like them they have two places key largo, islamorada, so you can dive different sites.their pretty good bunch of folks. one caution, watch your bill sometimes they get confused on multiple days of diving.

I experienced a cattle boat packed with smokers. No offence to any smoker but to us non-smokers it sucks. The diving was great (as it always is in the Keys) and the crew was friendly.

As another non-smoker.. I feel your pain.. hopefully it will be a little quiter in February.. We booked with them for the first week in Feb, couldnt turn down the price for the AOW.. So we get the Cert.. and a dive vacation, for less than the class itself would of cost us up here in New England...
