quick question

i am deciding where to take my initial set of scuba classes. one of the shops im looking at charges 250 for the class. then another 200 is charged to get certified (4 dives). do most places charge another 200 to get certified? from some of the other places i looked at, it doesnt seem like most do. any help qould be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

I guess it would depend on the shop....buy for the most part I'd say yes. The intial charge is for the classroom work. The other charge is for the actual open water dives. If there is a place close by you can get your dives in, it might work out real good. Otherwise, just do you classroom stuff, and if your planning a trip sometime in the near future you can do the open water dives on a reffurral. If your staying in a dive friendly location

For me that is way too much, but I am in the bottom of the Philippines. Everything is cheap here.

Not the way it is done at my LDS...We charge $290 for everything...class, pool and open water. My LDS also throws in a boat dive when you get certified...

We charge $350 (Canadian dollars) for the whole shebang, including gear rental for the open water dives, and no charge for the boat if the certification dives are done from our boat.

By breaking it in two they provide a clean break for those that want to take a warm water referral or just decide that the sport is not their bag.

A total of $450 is on the high side but for an extensive program could be worthwhile. Anyone doing it for under $300 has other financial motives, is really cutting a lot of corners or is a poor business person. It should also be a small class or have a low instructor/student relationship.

For $450 I would expect it to be all inclusive for gear and any boat fees though going on a boat is not at all necessary. You will still expect to own your mask, snorkel, booties and fins.

I think i paid like $400 US for the classrom work, pool and ow dives and class material.. And Norway aint known to be cheap when it comes to.. well.. anything?

in North Florida, $450 for a class and four dives is fairly reasonable ... it gets you a trip to the springs, though, not ocean diving

i paid $300 for the class and i think something like $150 for a trip to the springs, including a room for one night and four dives, including all fees for the dives at two sites

I live in Missouri, and I took my classes in Kansas City. Here is a breakdown of what the costs were:

$125 for the 2 day weekend class/confined water
$75 for the student pack (books and DVD)
$60 for the open water check out dives

But, I own all my own gear, so I got off a little better than someone who had to rent for the OW checkout dives.
