I own a Sherwood Wisdom 2 air-integrated console computer with quick disconnect. Since the computer functions as my SPG, in the event of computer failure I will lose all information on air remaining in my tank. I realize that I can run an analog SPG off the second HP port on my reg, but I would like to keep the clutter down. I realize that this might be a very stupid question, but is there a quick-disconnect SPG out there? Would a device swap underwater result in the SPG being damaged or exploding? Suggestions?

Thanks

Also, are all SPGs created equal, or are some better than others? Suggestions?

Great question. I am not sure on the quick connect spg.
I have the analog clipped to my hip as a redundant info source. It really is not clutter. Very much out of the way and easy access. I have used it several times to save my dives when my computer has died via battery. In my opinion I would not use a quick connect unit for fail safe reasons, also at depth one may be under to much stress to properly readjust your kit/spg to use.
So what I'm sayng is-just clip to the hip. Have great dives. kevin

You "could" setup a full 2nd console, but I would think that water in the loop would be damaging.

Couple thoughts though:
Gear has failed = dive is over

Aren't you heading directly to the surface?
Do you have your second bottom timer? What was the planned duration of the dive? Where your previous checks within expected norms? How much time is left on the watch?

Aborting a dive isn't a big deal...
If it's early in the dive,
get topside, swap equip, get a new tank and go diving...
If it's later in a dive... well you've had fun,
get topside, swap equip, get a new tank and go diving...

Short answer - that is my current SOP.

Slightly longer answer - I dive two computers (the other is a wrist-mount Sherwood running the same algorithms), so I actually could keep diving.

IF you have had back SPG... k, I see what your trying for... though the second computer really means you can dive the next dive ;-)

You could get a short hose and an analog gauge, just keep it behind you head or clipped to the top of your harness. Not convenient to read, but never in your way.

I don't think it would be possible to reconnect a QD under 3000PSI. It is hard to do with 135PSI.

If you could do it, you risk water in the line, which could be a very effective projectile. You would be going from ambient to 3000PSI in on shot and shooting a block of water, er concrete through your gauge.

Lastly, it it was me, I would probably drop my very expensive computer when swapping it out underwater. Just not worth the risk. If you don't have redundancy, you have to call the dive anyway. Much easier and safer to fix the gear topside.

.....I doubt you could swap out a QD SPG under 3000 psi pressure and if you could, water would enter the unit destroying the SPG anyway. I've been diving for YEARS with an AI computer on 1 HP port and an SPG on the other HP port as back up...never a problem....I clip both units off a left and right side waist fixed D-ring so stay neat/streamlined.

If you're that concerned about losing out on a dive then dive with two computers. One is an AI console and one is an AI wireless wrist computer. That way no information is lost if one computer goes down. Or dive with two AI wireless wrist computers and do away with the hassle of the console.

I've seen a lady that dives with a Suunto D9 and a Galileo Sol both at the same time.

I am not that concerned - just musing, perhaps planning.

Oh - I love the idea of two computers (one of which is wireless), so I am off to buy a lottery ticket...

You cant detach the gauge under pressure. You have to bleed off the pressure first. It would be like trying disconnect the first stage from the tank under pressure. At least for the ones I looked at.
