I will be down in the Charleston - Kiawah Island area in Oct. (10/16)

I'm hoping to sneak in a dive is possible.

Thus I have a couple questions...

1) Has anyone on the board dove in that area? Pretty fun? I read the temps are around 68F so that doesn't seem too bad.

2) I also read that there are plenty of bull sharks? Just read about them on good ol' wikipedia and they don't sound to be the nicest shark out there. Has anyone seen a bull shark?

3) Can anyone suggest any dive shops? I know of this site charlestondiving.com but I was looking for personal experiences you guys had.

That being said...I appreciate your help.

Karlo

Bull sharks can be a little aggressive but you just mind your business and they will mind theirs for the most part. You may or may not see any sharks, they all tend to be skiddish of the bubbles and divers. I wouldn't worry about it with your dives. I haven't had the pleasure of diving that far North of Savannah.

Good luck and happy diving!

Statistically, if you are going to be in the water with sharks, Scuba is your safest bet. Surfers, snorkelers, swimmers, waders, walkers, standers and floaters all get bit more than scuba divers.

Despite diving in "shark infested waters" (per the media) I hardly ever see one....

I have dove the general area quite a bit and I think it is a great place to dive. Here is a list of some of the dive operations in South Carolina. Research the websites to find information on the dive sites.

In regards to the question about sharks. I have seen lots of sharks over the years. I saw a Bull shark while diving offshore NC. I saw the Bull while diving on a shipwreck. I was standing on the deck and I was tightning my mask. I noticed a large sea creature passing by. It was about 15'-18' from me. It could have easily attacked but it had no serious interest. So I did something that now seems stupid. I pulled out my camera and started swimming after it. In hindsight this was really dumb. It was a very large Bull Shark. Fully grown and thick. It moved smoothly and steadily with a stealth like attitude. Angry sharks, from what I have read, move erratically, whip their tail back and forth, and arch their back like a cat.

In my way of thinking, the Bull Shark, the Great White Shark, and the Tiger Shark, are the three types of shark that one should pay special attention to while scuba diving.

Enjoy!
