Hi, My boyfriend and I are booked on a dive boat for September 9th at the channel islands. The problem is we are Northern California Divers and are not sure of the water temp or conditions. Do we need are full gear or just 3 mil wetsuits? Thanks for any information.
Sub-thermocline water temps have dropped here at Catalina recently. I hit 54 degrees on a "shallow" dive (100 ft) Saturday. San Diego tends to have colder temps than here.
My dive buddies in S.D. say conditions have been good for shore diving. Hope they stay that way as I'll be down there next weekend.
Water temps in San Diego (at least at La Jolla Shores) have been rather.... toasty.
On Aug 18th I had a shore dive at the Shores with a surface temp of 78 and 71 at 60 ft, which is unusual (in my limited experience), but you could see and feel the cold water upwelling from the canyon, which was probably closer to 60 degrees or so.
Yesterday (Sept 2) I had a long shallow dive just a few hundred yards farther south (Marine Room) and the temps were also good but not as high. The life guards were reporting 71, I had 74 at the surface and 69 at 20 ft along the rock reef.
I dived Friday Saturday and Sunday...and today at La Jolla and while the surface remains in the low 70s/high 60s at 60ft it was 55 and at 100ft it was 51. I verified this against 4 computers.....51. Bring a 7mm and a hooded vest if you plan any depth at all. Like Dr Bill said, it's usually colder here than it is up north.
