Question re: Sony DVD player "problem"(?)

Last night I tried to watch a video that I've watched many times in the past. For some reason the display has a large black square in the middle of the screen. This effect disappears if I "fast forward" the DVD play (or engage the TV setup) and it does not occur at with other DVDs. It also does not happen at the beginning of the DVD, you know the FBI warning and all that crap along with the "play, setup, etc" options, but only when I try to actually watch the program.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

power it up - and then power it down 5 times. wait 1 full minute between each cycle. disconnect the a/v cables on the back and pull the unit from its console and towards you. place it on the ground in front of you and begin jumping up and down on it in your full scuba gear.
