Hello to all.
I'm going to Cozumel for a couple days sometime in mid-January, but I won't know which days until 1-2 days before I get there.

If I phone a couple hotels to book a room a day or two before I arrive, would they normally give a discount from their posted rates? Or can I expect to pay the posted rate no matter when I book. Just kinda looking for some advice on the local customs here.

Same question with dive shops as well.

If there are offers available in January, you can take advantage of them at the last minute. Much of this is out of your hands as discount offers will depend on the island's businesses not doing as well as they expect. Standard, multi-day dive discounts per published price lists would certainly be honored. Note that many places will have new price lists that are effective in December and January. Sometimes you do best by booking last minute -- it's a gamble & you just never know....In any case, Cozumel taken as a whole always delivers good value, especially compared with most other Caribbean dive destinations.

Thanks for the advice guys. I enjoy the negotiation aspect of it, so I think that will go well.

I decided to write down the names of a few well-reviewed places in all the places we are going to be stopping, and I'll phone them as I figure out when I'm going to be in that city. Some very nice places in Cozumel, and for good rates (relative to what I've heard it delivers). Good thing I'm not going there at the beginning of the trip, I might never make it anywhere else. :)

Thanks again.

Curious: Where all are going? How are you traveling?

What do you want in a hotel? I ran a quick search on 9 different sites, finding Villa Blanca offered for $50, $73, $76, $83, $95, and $108 for an example. I've never stayed there, but they show up a lot on searches - seem to be a good starting point.

the advice to negotiate is good.
not likely to run into hotels with no vacancies this jan. i use aldora and if you wish they will get you a good hotel deal. my guess is that many other operators do the same.
when i go on a guy trip we stay at aqua safari inn. $40 per room per night. when my wife goes with me, we stay at casa mexicana. great breakfast and nice rooms.
i like to be in town and walk to restaurants where locals eat.

I used to be able to dicker with taxi drivers some. I think they passed my pic around. :(
