Hello all,
Iwant to learn to dive and get certified. I am looking for some advice on a school in San Diego preferably in the north county coastal area.
Or is it ok to just go to the yellow pages?
TIA

Ah ha! You didn't take the tour I suggested, now did ya'? Or maybe you did and didn't think of this - but you'll get a lot more opinions on the Southern Calf forum, as well as get to know more new, local dive buddies.

I don't think it really matters all that much whom you take OW with, but I am sure some are much better than others. A good OW course will teach you how to safely learn for real thru diving. Try to plan on AOW & Nitrox ASAP after as those will help and/or become suddenly necessary for a charter you want to do. I guess Rescue is a good course, too; by the time I took it, tho - I didn't learn anything. Probly should have done that one sooner.

Have fun!

You could start here. I have no direct knowledge of this club since I live in New England. I just did a Goggle search on "San Diego Dive Club"

http://www.dive-club.org/

I also, have a Word document with guidelines for selecting a prospective Scuba instructor. I believe it was created by Walter here on ScubaBoard.

Actually, I just found the thread on ScubaBoard and it was from Walter. Follow the link shown below and look at the third message in the thread written by Walter. Walter provides sound practical advice based on years of experience.

You not an idiot, just a forum :newbie: - and they can be confusing. Start at the top... ;)

go to forums, regional travel and dive clubs, select socal divers --- there you will find lots of opions about local dive shops (lds).

I would recommend however, that you also call (or even better) stop by SEVERAL and talk to the instructors. See if you can get a feel for their style, personality. IF they do not have time to TALK to you NOW, they will not have time to talk to you later ... also, different people have different learning styles, you need an instructor who can sense how you like to learn .. ie: visual, auditory.. tactile... ect.

Good luck!

Talked to a few settled on one. With my work schedule it was hard to make it work. The owner of the shop I settled on is willing to work with me on scheduling. I start in the middle of May.
Thank you everyone for your help.
