I have been looking at the Hollis DC2/212 reg with matching octo at a LDS (2 hours away) for $559 and just found the reg set on Prime Scuba for $349 but it has a DIN to Yoke converter. Prime says they are an authorized dealer. Is the converter a show stopper? What is your opinion on which one I should purchase?

Oh that's a can of worms....

I prefer DIN which means a commitment to get tanks with DIN/Pro/Convertible valves so I don't have to use adapters except when really needed. However, if you don't know the reasons for DIN vs Yoke and you are mostly vacation diving, you probably want to get a yoke valve and skip the adapters.

You might want to consider:

Traditional hose lengths with Yoke connection:

"Long hose" with DIN connection:

Both are 15% off right now. Both are very high quality and good value for your $$$.

there are a couple questions that need to be answered...

Where is your diving going to be? If you are going to mostly travel (like the Caribbean), yoke is the norm..

What size (diameter) tanks do you intend to dive most of the time with? Larger diameter tanks will sit farther off your back, POSSIBLY minimizing issues that a DIN-to-yoke adapter causes by putting the stage closer to your head.

Are you diving a BP/W with a STA? The STA may also move the tank further off your back, minimizing the impact of a DIN-to-yoke adapter putting the stage closer to your head.

For constant use, I would NOT dive a DIN with a DIN-to-yoke adapter. Once in a great while.... perhaps...

YMMV....

that price difference sucks.....

I prefer DIN as well but most rental tanks seem to be yoke. Since I travel by plane to dive I am pretty much stuck with what the boat charter offers. A part of me hates the idea of adapters yet it would give me a DIN when I had the chance to use it. Great offer on the Edge, off to research. Thanks.

I think the adapter would just add a failure point so saving money may cost me safety in the long run. I will be using a DSS BP/W single without a STA. Yeah the price difference does suck.

There is also "converters" as opposed to "adapters".

HOG Gear DIN to Yoke conversion Kit - Dive Right In Scuba - Plainfield, IL

Use a (6mm metric I think) allen wrench to remove the DIN component and then use a wrench (there's a custom driver that helps ) attach the yoke component. Use that on a trip and then switch it back to DIN when you get home.

All of my tanks (as an active local diver I rarely "rent" tanks... to much of a PITA ) are DIN at home.

BTW, if the other LDS is 2 hours away, how far are you from Canonsburg, PA? 1 1/2 hours? Jim Lapenta lives up there and is a good to go guy when it comes to Hog.

This is probably the one area where you're not really adding a failure point as compared to a straight yoke reg. The potential for a captured DIN o-ring to fail is infinitesimally small. I'd say zero, but someone could point out the time their buddy dove in a vat of acid and his DIN o-ring dissolved.

If you're considering HOG, look at the new D3 instead. Better performance than the D1 and it's Yoke.
There's also a new matching HOG Zenith 2nd stage. HOG/Edge is the same company.

The D3 is $158/$176 (cold water) Hog D3 1st Stage Yoke
The Zenith is $94 Hog Zenith Chrome 2nd Stage
A 7' hose is $34 Hose Regulator84 Inch 3/8
A 28" hose is $20 (in yellow if wanted) Hose Regulator 28 Inch 3/8

So $398/ or $425(cold) total - inc. 2X Zenith's but no gauges. Sale is on til the 9th. See if they'll deal on a package. I've bought from Divers Supply, they're reputable.
