I think DSS makes the best STAless single tank setup if STAless is what you are looking for. Yes, DSS plate is quite flat, and without STA it puts tank real close to your back. It can be an advantage for some and disadvantage for other tho. I can't use DSS because tank is too close and my head hit the first stage. But you really need to try it yourself to see if you like it.

Have you tried positioning the plate/wing higher up on the tank ? I used to hit my head with my 2 soft backplates until I moved the plate higher on the tank. My top cam strap is right near the tank shoulder and now my head doesn't hit the 1st stage.

I use DSS and HOG plates on my set ups. The HOG wings also do not require an STA and without I have zero issues with the reg hitting me in the back of the head.

I have several dss plates. both steel and kydex. I like them all. doubles or singles. I like the steel plate because of the ability to bolt on 4# steel plates on both sides for extra weight when needed. great for me when going from fresh to salt water or my shorty to a dry suit of full 3mm farmer john. The slots for the belting has an insert to protect the belt from wear. it does however prevent the dynamic adjmustment of the shoulder area belting. As far as wings go i have the tourus 27 +/- and it works great Its only drawback is the hose is center top in front of the tank valve. I am now going to oxycheq 30# for the hose on the left sholder. Downsides to the dss wings other than that is that you can not change a bladder your self. You have to send it in. Timely Service by dss is great. The bp and wings are designed so that you do not need a STA single tank adaptor. One less part to loose. My oxycheq wing has the same thing but they call it roll control. Even though they are made for no sta I have bolted up doubles and the plate works just as well. You will not go wrong with the dss plate. Toboin and crew are very good at what they do. Think about whether the wing fill hose location is right for you though. for me it restricts where i can put my tank. (Ther reg and hose fight for the same airspace).

I own 3x T17, 3x T26 and one T35 all with SS plate also I sold a bunch of them to clients, The one I use my self privately I purchased 2008 and used on over 3000 dives still works great based on the fact the I'm happy with my own units I purchased more around 2011/2012 for my wife and some as rental units which are by far not as durable. The one of my wife has been used by her for about 20 dives but no more than 30 has been torn open just as the entire rest of the rental units.
I did speak with the owner of DSS about this, it is apparently totally normal the inner bladder has to be bigger than the outer bladder, and he also said rental units are most likely excluded from any warranty, I could send in the units and they might consider to repair them. I know you should not use *any* damaged wing but when all your wings pop at the same time and you are right in the middle of the season you kind of have to think about something to keep going - so I used AquaSeal,
which probably voided the rest of the warranty if any. Biggest problem areas for me are the sides but also the edges where the inflator is connected to the BCD all torn.
Anyhow I'm sitting on a bunch of broken bladders in Okinawa, Japan shipping them back to America is not exactly cheap, I know a few people who have the same problems with there personal units, which never have been rented out. (I don't think they are torn because they where rental units) Long story short, they are not as durable as I though they where and I probably wont choose DDS for my future gear needs.

DSS has a lot of fanboy and girls on SB, so it is hard to get an unbiased opinion. I have wings from DSS, Oxycheq, Halcyon, Hollis, Apeks, and Zeagle. If I inflate them all the DSS will loose the air more far quickly than the others. The DSS wings also have some fraying of the threads on the seams. The other wings do not have this problem. So in my opinion the DSS wings are not any better build that the competition. However, I do like the shape of the wing and the attachment of the wing to the plate is very innovative. The material is flexible making it easy to pack.

As far as the plate goes, the steel plate is innovative with the ability to add a glide adapter, weight plates, and make adjustments without having to play with tri-glides. The plate is not finished as nicely as a Halcyon or Apeks plate, but that is just cosmetics. As far as the Kydex plate goes, it is nice but cannot take the glide adapter or weight plates which is a disadvantage in my eyes. Why DSS does not replicate the steel plate in an aluminum model is beyond me.

In my opinion, the Oxycheq is the best constructed wing. I have the regular model not the extreme.

I- Service and Knowledge of Tobin

The last bullet point should be first.

Apropos of nothing, but have either of you called on Dive Rite for their customer service in gear selection?

As far as diving knowledge goes, let's just say that when agencies and organizations need someone to do exploratory dives and such, they tend to call on Jarrod Jablonski and/or Lamar Hires and their respective boys and girls for a reason. I'm just sayin'...

i agree and i also have shifted to oxycheq wings
