Buying used gear is fine, but unless the price is VERY good, you may not save as much as you hoped. I bought my doubles regs used -- two MK25/S600 combos, with hoses and pressure gauge, for $650. But by the time I had them in to the shop for service, I had spent about half the difference between what I paid and what the shop could have been arm-wrestled into selling me new ones for. A lot depends on what your shop charges you for service, and for parts.

Sure, but paying $325 for used MK25/S600s in need of servicing, and then having to pay full price for servicing, is on the high end for used regs. A more typical example would be paying somewhere around $200 for a MK20/G250, (or G500) which is quite comparable to the top-of-the-line MK25/S600, or $100-150 for a MK10 (or 15) with the same 2nd stage. IOW, the biggest savings in used comes from buying older model regs that perform just as well. Another big savings comes from not having to service every year just to maintain the warranty, and instead servicing only when the reg needs it. MK25/S600s that are rebuilt really well and taken care of properly should last several seasons before needing to be rebuilt. Of course, I suspect in your case you dive quite a bit more than a typical recreational diver.

You ended up with exactly the reg you wanted, which is good, and I"m sure you don't feel bad about the price.

I think the biggest cost savings when buying "quality used" is when you get to the point of servicing your own regs.

I currently have a Zeagle Flathead VI "fettish" because with the release of the new Flathead 7 this year, the Flathead VI's are going for a song. I chose the Flathead because it is a good reg, easy to service, does not require special tools to work on it (other than a pin spanner), and the parts are openly available online.

I now have two very nice used Flathead VI / ZX 2nd's for a grand total price (including 2 rebuild kits) of $377.

If you have to pay labor charges for servicing you can still get terrific deals, but you need to look a little harder for them.

Best wishes.
