I go to Indonesia every year. I've flown without several airlines and never booked anything similar. And there's still a way to go

Most airlines charge an arm and a leg if extra baggage is not bought in advance so Qatar is not alone.

It’s not just Qatar. Flew from the UK to Jakarta with Singapore Airlines and it was 800 GBP for 24kg at check in (2007). 2/3 the price of the return ticket. The one that really took the biscuit was Manila to Heathrow with Emirates, 1600 USD for 20kg (2013). These were all work trips that they booked, so no cost to me but still frustrating.

As has been said. The total cost of travel needs to be worked out in advance.

Yes for the second bag.
Online they wouldn't let you add another bag because the last flight wasn't operated by Qatar

So the additional charge is attributed to your second non-Qatar flight then.
