pro's and con's dive-rite

I used a Rec Wing with my TPII for several years, and liked it much better than my SeaQuest jacket. At the time, I loved it. When I switched to a backplate and started deco diving, I kept my DR wing and soon found, as Rich said, that the wing is a little small and improperly shaped to be a good doubles wing. When I got an Oxy Cheq doubles wing, I found that it was much better... no suprise there. What DID suprise me was that when I started using a dedicated singles wing, I found the Rec Wing wasn't much good at that either... in an effort to make it a one-size-fits-all wing, they made it too big for single tank diving, and it tacos around the tank more than it ought to. I didn't realize it until I noticed how much better a singles wing performs.

As I've posted before elsewhere, the Rec Wing is designed to be both a singles and doubles wing, and IMHO the compromises that requires mean that while it can be used for both purposes, it isn't very well suited to either. Buying a Rec Wing is sort of like wanting both a Harley Davidson and a touring bicycle, and buying a moped instead so you can save money and not have to change vehicles. If you aren't looking for a one-size-fits-all wing, there's no reason to get it. If you are, I think you ought to reconsider.

If you want to dive singles, get a singles wing, DiveRite or otherwise. Personally, I prefer OxyCheq or Halcyon for singles, and OxyCheq wings are a lot less expensive.

hey thanks everyone for all of the great advice and all the pro's and cons sent forth, i got some good opinions out of it!!! well i got to use it for the first time this weekend, and as i use only my hp steel 120's it seemed to fit the tanks great, and as i have only ever used a jacket style bc (sherwood avid) untill now, i can say i love the back inflate and the way the full harness fits and is so secure, no squeez, and the back plate is real comfertable, and i was able to drop more lead, now only use 12 pounds in cold water. what a big differance!!! by the way for those of you diving monterey, this weekend was awsome, well over 30ft vis and flat as glass at the break water!!!! thanks again guys!!!!

i just would like to ask which has better support? TP 1 or 2? can i also configure the set up harness + BP + wing? m planning to get one next month. would appreciate the inputs! thanks! =)

Ive been diving the last year with Dive Rite transplate harness with SS plate and trek wing wich is good for large singles and a deco bottle or small doubles. couldnt be happier . love the transplate release points , personally I dont care much about this DIR crap about failure points. its very comfortable to get in and out of the harness.

miami_diver i agree with 100% and also like the harness and all, great rig ,and i also along with you am NOT DIR i just like the rig. CHEWIE i cant answer your question as i dont know i have only ever used this rig and a jacket style bc so i hope someone will see your post that can answer you!!! jim

Speaking of crap ... why bring DIR into the discussion? The man asked about a specific product, which has nothing to do with DIR.

As to the OP ... my first backplate/wing system was the exact same rig, and compared to the ScubaPro SuperHawk I had been diving, it was a step increase in comfort and performance. You got it at a good price ... you should be very happy with it for a long time to come.

One bit of advice ... don't try an Oxycheq or Halcyon wing with that rig. I made that mistake, and ended up eBaying my Rec wing and buying an Oxycheq ... even though I had been perfectly happy with the Rec wing up to that point ...

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Dive Rite sells two similar systems ...

A TransPac II ... http://www.diveriteexpress.com/bcs/transpac.shtml

And a TransPlate ... http://www.diveriteexpress.com/bcs/transplate.shtml

The TransPac II is a soft-pack, inclusive system. You purchase the TPII you only need to decide which wing you want to use and you have a complete system.

The TransPlate is a backplate, component system. Although the harnesses are similar, you can use the TransPlate harness on anyone's backplate and with anyone's wing.

I have owned, and dived, them both and of the two I prefer the TransPlate ... although I think the TransPac II is one of the better soft-pack BCDs on the market.

thanks bob, i realy like it, i thought i loved my sherwood avid, it is a good bc (sherwood),i think, but nothing like the dive-rite, i am so much more comfortable in the dive-rite and it seems like an improvment in bouyency or easier anyway!!
