I prefer a lighter aluminum plate and carrying lead on a weightbelt, so I can drop lead in an emergency. That option is very important to me, maybe less so to others, but certainly something to consider.

If I were you I would actually do some diving before you make a decision. Arguments can be made for both steel and AL plates, and in reality there's not much practical difference. I started out with a steel plate and swapped it out for AL because I didn't want to haul around an extra four pounds everywhere I go. Other people have found valid justification to go with steel. It's just not a big deal for a new diver.
