I have read till my eyeballs hurt these last few days. my question now is : I have found a halcyon al BP with a single 27lb lift wing,a continuous web harness and an aluminum STA for $450.00 (new in a LDS). Is this a good deal? I hear Halcyon is very proud of their products. I posted a thread in the HOG forum yesterday and have not gotten a response yet on diving a ss bp versus an al bp wet with double steel 72'S wet (as I don't yet own a dry suit) so I haven't decided what to buy. Price may help me make my mind up. If anyone has an opinion on either of these I am all ears(cause my eyes hurt).
Once again thanks.

letting brand aside for others to discuss (I only have experience with DSS and Salvo)...

Wet with double steels you may want aluminum. I used to dive dry steel doubles with an aluminum plate (more options as to placement of ballast). Wet I imagine you'll appreciate that flexibility since you won't need nearly as much ballast.

Halcyon doesn't currently make a 27 lb. singles wing and I don't think thay have for a few years (the Eclipse 30 & 40 replaced the entire Pioneer series).

You should take that into consideration when judging the price.

Hacyon may be proud of their products, but that's only important if you work for them or own their stock. DSS https://www.deepseasupply.com/ for example, also makes some very nice plates, and Tobin will even help you figure out what you need.

In any case, a 27 Lb wing is definitely not enough if you're going to dive double steel 72's (16 - 20+ Lbs negative when full, depending on the tank and manifold and regs) with a thick wetsuit. You could easily find yourself planted on the bottom if you're lucky enough to be in an area that has a bottom.

He said it's a 27 lb. singles wing, I think he's more concerned with the plate.

Sorry if I was not entirely clear. The combo is all assembled and the price includes The single wing(which I may be mistaken about. It may be 30lb lift. I have seen and read so many things lately). I would dive it with a single tank for now until I could afford to double them up.

In short, $450 for a new complete halcyon BP/W set up is a very good price, and you could probably sell it for almost as much if you try it and don't like it. Lots of people pay hundreds more for a halcyon set up.

But, that's not to say that there are not other even better deals around. The reason this price is really good is only because halcyon gear is so overpriced to begin with. There are comparable set ups by oxycheq and deep sea supply for around the same price or lower that you should consider.

I dive double 72s in fresh water with both a 3 mil and 5 mil suit, and I use an AL plate. I would not use a steel unless you typically need a lot more weight than I would. The tanks are around neutral when empty, but add at least 5 lbs for the manifold/bands/regs, probably more, another 8 or so for the gas, you might be looking at 15 lbs negative when full. To me that's not much for doubles, you can get by with a small wing. I think LP72s are great small doubles and I'm sure you'll enjoy diving with them.

I fully agree - for a new rig, it is quite an attractive price. There is nothing wrong with an AL bp for single tank diving. You may need a bit more (up to 4 lbs) weight on your belt, but that isn't a problem. You will be able to use the plate for doubles diving in the future, with an appropriate doubles wing. You could possibly get a used / new plate, and a used single tank wing for less money on eBay, buy some webbing and a STA, and set up a rig. But, the amount you would save might not be all that much, compared to the convenience of a local purchase.

i have no affiliation with this company but this month at divers-supply.com you can get a dive rite backplate and harness plus a hog wing (single or double wing) for $199. that's a smoking deal.
