And that's fine if you can keep all your fingers together! With some of my buddies it's either a sloppy zero or a sloppy "I'm OK are you OK?"

All hand signals suffer from sloppy users. Just as sloppy speaking or writing can be confusing.

Perhaps, but the point is that the closed fist is LESS prone to being made sloppily than the "O" signal, and isn't clearer less confusing communication the goal?

The problem is that the fist is non-standard and also has other uses/meanings. You really don't want your hand signals to have to depend on the context, or to have to retrain people to your way of doing things; both are confusing.

I’m not hung up on one method of indicating numbers over another.

One technique is bound to be more popular over another in a given region.

Regarding hand signals in general, I think the two important principles to keep in mind are: (1) think about what’s really important to communicate and (2) do it slowly but crisply.

Nothing tells others that we’re rookies quite like trying to communicate too much in a hurry or being too lazy to “enunciate our words.”

Really?! You realize that besides myself there are a few other divers on this thread who signal only the first two numbers of gas remaining. In some cases that system depends on context. For example, my buddy signals 2 then 1. Does he mean 2100 psi or 210 psi? Which is it? Well, without grilling your partner the gas remaining can be determined by context. If it's at the beginning of the dive it's 2100 psi. If it's at the end of the dive it's 210 psi.

And if he signals 2-1-0-0 then no context is needed, including whether it is psi or bar.
