I try to always use the 1-5 vertical, 6-9 horizontal. It's what I teach, and if I'm diving with new buddies that use something else will try to steer them that way.
I use the same... and "hundred" can be assumed. If I signal 1... 3... that means 1300 PSI. Usually I tap my thumb and middle finger together like a Pac-Man eating dots to make the zeroes.

Our favorite, which I don't see much out in the field, is a closed fist that "nods" once for every thousand...and resistant to misinterpretation.

Might be a reason it's not that common. And if it's not common, I think you're likely to get a lot of misunderstanding from those outside your dive team. Not saying don't use it - it clearly works for you and your teammate.

Could be mistaken for “Bubbles - minor leak”.

apparently, (according to the DM on Cat Palau where just returned)
There's not an industry standard. So, we used: thousands on the forearm and hundreds on fingers.
Being an old fart diver since 70s, We use open and closed hands: two fingers. Close hand. Three fingers. Close hand. Equals 2300 psi.
Which is a tad less than our old steel 72s would hold so obviously I am talking the newer aluminum 80s.

Not if you just asked my air pressure.

Besides, I thought bubbles/minor leak was signaled with "jazz hands" while wiggling your fingers!
If you do jazz hands, I think I'd start looking around for a spanish dancer dorid, or maybe a dancing bony fish of some sort

I learned that bubbles/leak is: pinch your index finger and thumb like the Italian hand gesture 🤌, and repeatedly tap your index finger against your thumb. Like a small valve opening and closing

I signal the same way: 1-5 is fingers vertical, 6-9 is fingers horizontal, just give the first two numbers. The only thing I do different is I close my fist and push it outward to designate zero. The problem with making an "O" using your fingers and thumb is it could be confused with the OK signal.

I have never heard a good reason what could be wrong with the "1-5 is fingers vertical, 6-9 is fingers horizontal" method. I have heard plenty of reasons why the others have flaws though. Flashing 500's with the hand may be the most absurd one IMO.

Which is why you do not make a zero with just your first finger and thumb; you use ALL your fingers and your thumb.
