Since the entire Big Island is a must see-Volcanoes,waterfalls, Hilo-side,south point,the kohala region-and it can rain alot,damping your spirits and trip,starting mid Sept.-Oct.-I think April to September is best to miss the rain-IMHO.Total Hawaii Lover-(I even love the rain)Aloha.............Peace......Saildiver.
 
I think you should try to make sure you are there during Whale Season....Dec - Mar sightings are almost guaranteed. It's a fun time of year, lots of stuff happening. Don't worry too much about trying to predict the weather that far in advance. Most of the time you can drive to clearer skies if the rain starts to move in.
