OK guys I know Hartfort is nowhere near anything really. But what diving is within that area? Any river dives? I find quarries boring. How far to the nearest good ocean diving? Any divers in Hartfort?

Cheers!

There just opening up a quarry (search thread for Portland Quarry) There are shore dives like Stonington off Long Island Sound but most go north to S. RI (Ft. Wetherill) or Cape Ann. (yes, it makes it a long day with driving to and from. )

I live just outside of Hartford in South Windsor. PM me if you need any further information on the area.

There's shore and boat diving from Jamestown and Newport, Rhode Island, which should be roughly 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Hartford.

There's great shore and boat diving from Cape Ann, Massachusetts. You can drive there from Hartford in 2 hours.

I never dove in any area rivers.

Here are a couple potentially helpful links:

I hope some of this helps.

Welcome to cold-er water diving, Dr. Steve! And yes, Hartford is not really near anything. But there is some diving in the state, you just have to decide if it's for you. Fresh water diving: There are multiple lakes in CT, and the Connecticut River is right there (I know people have dove it in CT, and in parts of the river that are in MA). Too bad you don't like quarry diving, as in nearby Portland, and major dive local is in the process of being constructed out of an old quarry (using Dutch Springs in PA as a template).

Salt Water: A bit tougher, but you can take a ride up to Mass/Boston (1.5 hours) for shore/boat diving. Very dedicated community of divers up there, and lots to see underwater. RI (also about 1.5 hours) diving is also not too bad; good shore dives, and you can ferry over to Block Island and dive the U-Boat. For a thrill, you can go out on one of of the shark charters and go cage diving (or not) with Makos and Blue Sharks. CT is not good for salt water diving, except maybe to lobster/hunt or just to get wet.

the Connecticut river runs right through Hartford, its diveable but can be tough. there are "coves" all around the area, there are several ponds/lakes in the area, the shorline diving is about 45 minutes driving distance. rhode island Jamestown is about 11/2 hour drive.

Thanks Michael. S. Windsor is where the company is (Gerber Scientific (Ventures)). I don't have a date set up for the interview yet, but I'll let you know when I do. Perhaps we can have a beer.

Welcome to cold-er water diving, Dr. Steve!

You mean it's not really cold? Where real divers wear a shorty and whimps go dry? Sounds pretty warm to me! I'm a Brit, so I think the water temperature around there is somewhat like what I am used to in England, although I will get an ice hood as I tend to get those cold water head aches :) Now I just have to see how the rest of the interview process goes!

I know where that is. Let me know when you're heading this way.

Thanks! Do you by any chance know anyone that works there? Always good to talk to someone who isn't on the interview team!

Steve

I know a number of engineers in the area but I'm not able to think of anyone I know who works there. If I do think of someone, I'll let you know, though.

Michael
