Possible Direct Flight from Cayman to Roatan

This article says that government leaders from Cayman and Honduras are working on a mutual trade agreement that may include direct Cayman Airways flights from Cayman to Roatan.

That might help bring down the costs of flying to Roatan because flights to Cayman from the US are comparatively inexpensive but sometimes it can be difficult and costly to get to Roatan.

For divers this might also make it easy to do a 2-island trip.

Cayman already has service to Honduras on Aerolíneas Sosa with twice weekly (Monday and Fridays*) flights to La Ceiba. You can connect to the Bay Islands or to Tegucigalpa for connections throughout Central America. There simply is not enough passenger load to support greater frequency.

Hard to imagine enough demand to support a direct flight to Roatan from GCM. This seems like more generic talk that is meant to bolster good feelings as a part of trade talks. Don't take this as a serious plan.


*Leaves GCM at 1pm, arrived LCE 1pm. Connect to Roatan departing at 4pm. Return leaves Roatan 6:40am, arrive LCE 6:55am. Leave LCE 10am arrive GCM 12pm. Early departure but plenty of time to make connection to a flight stateside.

Many Cayman Airways flights to other Caribbean islands, like Cuba and Jamaica, stage through Cayman Brac so perhaps that is what is being considered.

My guess is that they plan to use the Saab for that Roatan route.

They get little use of that plane as it is.

Trade talks continue between Cayman and Roatan. It appears that Cayman is hoping to become a "hub" for Caribbean travel.
