I ask the question only to clear up what I learned in PADI which was that the tank always needs to align with the top of the BCD ;-)
There are BC out there, that even when correctly adjusted, will not hold a cylinder in the middle of a divers back while standing on the surface. I would speculate that the advice you received about cylinder placement in your basic scuba class might have been based on the old (very old) hard plastic backpack type BCs. Where ever the backpack was located, there the cylinder would be.
The solution to the issue is the ditch your modern soft back BC abd purchase your favorite flavor of Back Plate with a Wing. (I can't believe I just said that:shocked2
