I'm planning on heading up to Portage on Sunday. The original plan was for Saturday but the weather looks better on Sunday. There will be 3 or 4 of us in our group. Anyone from the board diving Portage on Sunday?

I'll be there on Sunday. It'll be me and my two sons and a co worker. Its my youngest son birthday and he wants to go diving. We were going to spend the weekend, but the last two weekends we got hammered with the weather. Sunday is supposed to the better of the two days. My buddy just bought a sea hunter metal dectector and we are going to be trying it out Sunday also. We'll be in the back forty in the morning and up by the large plane in the afternoon......We'll have a silver F-150. If you are still interested in the YMCA DM book, I'll bring it.....Frank

We had a great day at Portage. Northen - I think we saw your F-150 on the backside of the quarry but we never made it back there. I spoke to an individual who lives within a mile of the quarry and he said he had never seen the water level so high. All the rock ledges that I walked over for entry the last time were underwater. I think it made the entry/exits easier. The vis wasn't great but it made for good compass navigation practice. We got three dives in and we only explored a fraction of the place. My son and his buddy are graduate aero engineering students at UM. Needless to say we spent a good amount of time exploring the Hansa jet. We also found the suspended yacht./sailboat and I was surprised to see that its named for us - The Great Lakes Wrecking Crew! I've completed the 2008 Whitestar/Gilboa/Portage circuit. I'd be hard pressed to say which one is my favorite place to dive - all three would be in the running for different reasons. I guess I'll just have to dive all three again so I can try to break the three way tie!

The vis was much better in the back forty area. We dove the "big" plane and the vis was only about 10 feet. The back forty was around 30 feet though. Also, the in the back, I think the entries are much better for there are four easy walk in points. Three of them are concrete slabs and a set up metal steps. There are also two tables on the ledge to gear up at. You'll also see a couple of boats and a convertiable Chrysler that has the GLWC on them that I seen so far. The water is very high at the quarry. Jeff is doing a good job with pumping water out of the camp sites. Glad you had fun. Hope to see you around...........Frank
