Will setting the max PO2 alarm on my computer from 1.60 to 1.20 or 1.40 have any affect on air (21% oxygen) diving? I know the Suunto has settings for more conservative diving. Is this a way to set it on the Versa Pro?

Realize that my Nitrox course was only a few months ago, and I don't have the info in front of me right now...

The max alarm probably alerts when you attempt to exceed the partial pressure of O2 that you've selected. Also, I presume that you are doing this in a nitrox mode, since I would doubt that the alarm is available in the air mode (although I will admit that I haven't looked at my Suunto manual to find out).

PP02 is computed by multiplying the number of atmospheres X the percent of O2...

I don't believe this type of alarm setting changes anything regarding NDL's, so your DCI risk probably isn't counted (with respect to when this particular alarm goes off....).

When I think of conservative, I think of reducing DCI, CNS toxicity risk, etc. so a 1.2 P02 setting would be more conservative (with respect to CNS tox) than 1.4, but it wouldn't affect the dive until you get to 155 feet (5.7atm) or so, unless I've computed wrong.

Even a 1.2ppO2 is 155' when diving on air, so it shouldn't have any effect in normal recreational diving ranges.

If you want to dive more conservatively in regards to N2 loading, just pay attention to the tissue loading bar graph and keep it out of the yellow zone.
 
I see now that this was a stupid question. Tissue loading, nitrogen compartments, FO2, PO2, ATM, etc…. much more to learn then using a simple RDP. I’ll just set the TLBG to alert me when it enters the yellow area. And take an enriched air course when I get a little more experience.
