Does anyone really know anything about Squbaquarium? Other than what is on their website.
It sounds cool, but I am concerned about purchasing a membership in something that has not even been built. They don't even know where it is going to be built. That means they are still looking for a site & the land has not even been purchased yet. I also find the 'threat' of membership prices increasing once the facility is built & limited membership availability unsettling. I would love to have something like this built in the Chicago area, I am just a little skeptical.
Does anyone know any more details?

I'd say you pretty well summarized the situation: the idea has been floating (or not) around for some time, for whatever reason it seems to be struggling to gain traction. I'd say that the $149 should be considered risk capital, if they ever break ground maybe they'll let the founding members put their finprints in the cement...

Some of the folks involved in the project have a lot of dive business experience but that's certainly no promise that the project will ever gel. On the other hand, $149 isn't a lot of money, either. For the cost of a couple of Lake Michigan charters (or a plane ride to Florida) you get some bragging rights if it happens or a funny barroom story if it doesn't.

Personally, I'd rather see the money and energy go into scuttling another ship in Lake Michigan but at least the pool would offer an alternative to the quarries. I haven't joined, mostly because I like diving in Lake Michigan and don't see the need for the pool. If they'd let me bring a speargun, it might be a different story...

LOL!
Spearfishing at an aquarium. Isn't that the same as shooting fish in a barrel?

I know it's not alot of money. It's not more than I'm willing to spend. But it is more than I'm willing to gamble with. Especially since the odds of this actually happening don't look too good. If it was a sure thing, I'd pay the membership fee & monthly dues. And I'd have a nice place to dive when the weather was bad. I'd be all over it, no doubt.
