Laps of flutter kick with a kickboard. Half the flutter kicks I see use WAY too much knee bend and 99% of us could use more aerobic activity.

Are you in a commercial pool?

Awareness - where are the swimmers in the pool? Do you know when they are within x meters?
I'll be in our own pool. It's a deep, diving pool but not overly long, I can do swim drills at the gym but that pool is only 3feet deep. We rent the city pool when hubby teaches a class but he's not teaching much right now since he's taking a double doctoral load, plus he's a research assistant.
So, just me, the dobe and the papillon. They don't really like swimming but I throw them in because it's good for them. The old chihuahua gets a buy.

Lots and lots of helicopter turns? inverted and right-side up? :D

line skills - tie offs on weights. following the line blind. reeling in & out. one-handed bowline.

 Cave requires a one-handed bowline? OMG . . .

no, but it sure is handy.

however, i can only do it drunk, since i learned it at a christmas party. larry says that's a fine example of state-dependent learning.

How about I put SCUBA on the Doberman, along with a pretty good sized weight belt. Tell her to stay in the deep end and practice rescuing her? Probably won't help her comfort in the pool but it would be good practice rescuing the panicked, flailing victim!
