Hi everyone! Just got my OWD card last week and joined a diving club. I live in scandinavia and I am not planning to dive during winter season. Luckily my diving club provides me a possibility to dive in a public pool outside it's opening hours to maintain my skills.

But the question is - do you think it's ok for me to dive there without a buddy? I don't yet have any diver friends and my work hours are such that I doubt that finding a buddy might also be quite a challenge. The pool is 4m deep and there are usually other people too - most of them not divers though.

Your opinions will be highly appreciated by this newbie wannabe diver :coffee:

Hi Damsel,

there are a lot of Scandinavian divers here on SB. You just might find one near you.

I wouldn't recommend diving solo.

Always dive with a buddy, even if just in a bath tub,you never know.It is ok to take a solo shower if you like :D .

You need a buddy, period. Plenty of people have died in shallower water than that.

I too would recommend a buddy, especially at your current experience level. Joining the scuba club was a good way to help find one, and perhaps you can make some local contacts thru scubaboard as well. I have a lot of dives and would either have a buddy in water with me or at least someone on side of pool watching out for me if was in pool practicing skills or trying new equipment out. Besides, you need to find local buds anyway so you'll be ready for your 'real' diving when summer comes ;) :)

There's diving clubs in Canada too where members do sessions in pools. Divers do dive kind of solo too in these pools but the main difference is that there are quite a few divers in the pool at the same time so there are always others around. Not a buddy setup but divers are at least never far from each other. I would look for a dive club.

I remember a guy died in a pool while testing some things on his rebreather...
Ok, that may be a bit different than OC diving, but Murphy doesn't just hide in the ocean

I dont think u have to . There is not real reason to dive with a buddy in a pool. if u run out of air and cant save ur self in 4 m of wate you shoundnt be diving, so i would say that its ok, i disagree with everyone else, its a pool. nothing should happen, and u shouldnt be certified. u should learn to be a indepentend diver and be able to do things on ur own

lot of things can happen besides 'running out of air' even in a 4M pool, so if you pass out or have some other emergency, possibly having nothing to do with your diving, it is nice to have either buddy in water or at least someone at side of pool keeping an eye out who could get you out of water. Not sayin' you will have to, but when murphy bites he usually bites hard ;)
