I want to start using a pony bottle. I will use my old but trusty MK5 1st stage. I intend to invert the bottle on my back. My question is this - I have an old ScubaPro SPG. Can I remove it from its hose and screw it directly into the 1st stage HP port. I think I'd only check the pony pressure when I geared up on the boat. Thanks.

Nope wont work. Consider one of the little button gauges there not too accurate but there good enough to let you know the bottle is full. Also there much smaller and less of a snag potential.

The SPG connects to the hose with a high pressure spool using an O-ring on each end of the spool. It is a lot different than the HP hose fitting on the other end of the hose.

If you just want to check the tank pre-dive, you can use one of the button gauges that go on the first stage or invest in a dedicated tank checking gauge (basically a pressure gauge attached to a yoke) The tank checking gauge is a better option as it is more accurate than a button gauge. It also wastes less air from the pony than attaching it to your primary reg to check the pressure.

If in the future you want to see the spg under water, mount the pony right side up and run the SPG on a regular HP hose to the right side of your body.

If you are concerned about being able to easily turn the tank on/off under water AND see the gauge underwater, rig the pony like a stage bottle and mount the SPG on a 6" or 7" HP hose.

If you would like the sheapest simplest alternative, buy a 6" high pressure hose and use it for your pony. It is small and out of the way and gives you alot better reading than the button style. Of course you can tie wrap it to make it lower profile.
