40 they sling and swim really nice
 
Depends quite a bit on a number of different factors as has been pointed out (SAC rate, response to problems, depth, water temperature, etc.).

I used to dive with a 13 cu ft which was adequate to recover from 80-100 ft given my SAC rate and other personal characteristics. When my 13 went out of hydro, I upgraded to a 19 since I was occasionally diving deeper. Now I'm looking at a 30 which I'll carry when I know I'm going beyond 130 ft for specific purposes.
 
19cf is a good personal sport diving size...that is what I sling alot of the time,,,,my stage bottle choice is a 50cf.
