The handle is not for carrying out of the water.

Thanks AWAP--spelling shouldn't count, but for the fact that I'm new to this and it is always possible that your spelling was correct and that you were referring to something about which I know nothing. From your description, I think I can now envision how the pony slings.

Although I don't use a backplate (I use a soft backpack with SP double tank bands), I find that mounting my pony upside down near the bottom of my tank (an HP 120) allows all three pands to grip the tank without much interference. See image:
