I have had back surgery with fusion at L4-L5 and L5-S1 with no real deficits except a bit less flexibility.

My real problem is a bit of neurological problems in my right arm as a result of a lightning strike.
It doesn't cause me problems with activity but could confuse the issue with eval for DCI.
These days I am staying pretty far from even getting close to deco limits so that is not a major concern.

Only 35% or so of the voters regard themselves as healthy (of 46 votes). This means 65% isn't!

This raises interesting questions:
- What would the vote result in if 'ordinary' non diving people were asked to vote? (i.e. are divers just a sick bunch of guys?:spew: )
- Are 'sick' divers :yuck: more eager to vote?

One thing I'm pretty sure of, divers are probably more aware of their health issues than people not into physical fitness or exercise, so if 30% of them suffer from something, EXACTLY 30% of them probably know about it and get appropriate treatment for it!

Hypothyroidism

"Hashimoto's Thyroiditis" to be exact. An auto-immune disorder where the body's immune system develops antibodies against the thyroid gland.

Take .15mg Synthroid daily

Lots of my friends say, "Diving will get u thru tmes of no job better than a job wil get u thru times with no diving." In my case, depression sets in & makes diving less comfortable.

I'm interested in the fact that so far over 10% of those answering this poll have asthma. If any of you who have asthma would like to answer the following questions, I'd be even more interested:

1) How active is your asthma -- how many times in an average week do you have wheezing or chest tightness? How many nights in an average month do you wake up in the middle of the night due to wheezing, chest tightness or cough?

2) What medications/inhalers do you currently take for your asthma?

3) Have you ever been hospitalized or had to go to the emergency room for your asthma?

4) Have you ever gone diving at a time when your asthma was symptomatic? Did any adverse event occur?

5) Do you take any special measures, either in the way you dive (e.g. rate of ascent/descent or other measures) or in the equipment you use because of your asthma?

Thanks ahead of time for your answers.:D

I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). One type from my mother's side and another from my father's side, lucky me.;] However, given the peak physical (plus mental and emotional) condition I keep myself in to stay out of a wheelchair and further disabilities my doctor thought I could give diving a go and happily signed the papers for me.

The only diving problems I am having due to EDS (so far) are my ankles dislocating every kick from the force of the water against the fins and the discomfort of the wetsuit's pressure against my hyper-sensitive skin. Fortunately, my dive buddy is my husband who acts as my "hands" and does all the lifting of tanks, gear, equipment etc so I can dive as pain free as possible.

The days following diving though are certainly not anywhere near pain-free but that's the price I pay to feel like a seal underwater. =]
