The search for a missing Polish diver in the lake Attersee (Upper Austria) had to be cancelled yesterday afternoon (Sun). The man did not return from diving near the notorious spot "Black Bridge".
Divers have searched the area, which is up to fifty metres deep, but this was in vain. Klaus Decker, police Vöcklabruck, explained that technical means are needed in order to dive down deeper. Due to heavy waves, those means cannot be used at the moment.
Rüdiger Lenz, leader of operation of the rescue divers, assumes that the search can be continued on Wednesday or Thursday after the weather has changed. The divers will use a camera and a sonar.
Polish divers called the emergency services of Vöcklabruck late Saturday afternoon. They told them that one of their colleagues has been missing since diving at the "Black Bridge".
The group of six divers was diving in depths of 40 metres. There, the missing man said goodbye to the group in order to descend another ten metres. When he did not return to the surface of the lake, the divers called the emergency services.
It turned out soon that the man did not have a lot of oxygen left in his tank. As the first dives were unsuccessful, it was clear that the man could only be recovered dead.
Only by examining his instruments it can be revealed why the man did not return to the surface. The "Black Bridge" is well known in the diver scene and attracts many divers. Mr Lenz explained that one could easily dive down to depths of 85 metres or deeper due to the steep descent of the shore.
