Could be that in order to set the record you need to bring all of your gas down and back up since this is an OC scuba record. I would think having pre placed stages would not make it a true traditional scuba record.

Unless things have changed in recent years, no, I do not believe that - having to carry / bring up personally all the cylinders you used during the dive until surfacing - is a requirement.

If that is the case, then why carry any gas at all? Just pre clip all your stages and deco gas to the line. Un-clip and re-clip as you move down and up.

Because you simply cannot carry all the gas you need to that depth both down and back to the surface.

And hence why pre cliped stages - or having safety divers hand them off / take the used stages from you - is the norm (that is, if you can call anything about diving to these depths 'normal').

I know that. I think you are misunderstanding. If there's no requirement for the record to carry your gas, then I would not carry any gas at all. It makes no sense why all of these deep record attempt divers carry several cylinders if it is not required. Why would he carry 15 bottles when you say he doesn't have to carry any to set the record?

Because its a very long way from 300m to 200m where you will likely not have any safety divers and where you dont want to waste a single second faffing around with clipping stages. And remember he didnt have a safety diver at 200...

Also, I doubt that you will find many safety divers willing to go to this depth, let alone hand off 5 stages at that depth ... so I would imagine that you need to bring a large amount of gas to cover that ... at an average depth of 250m, a 20L stage will last say 6min? Call it 1h minimum to get to a depth where you can hand off/on, thats 10 of those stages ... (I have no idea about such deco schedules, but playing with deco planner a bit spits out some 30min to descend at 40m/min down to 300m and immediately back up to 200m. Although I’m pretty sure thats not a schedule that would work in reality, so call it double at least ...). So in any case, you will need A LOT of gas.

descend at 40m/min
..which is pretty close to freefall in my book. Good luck managing your drysuit gas at such descent rates (if you happen to dive dry, which might be a good idea at that site).

Also arresting your descent at those depths will require huge amount of gas to inflate the BCD whose inflator is usually not designed to handle the gas density at 32,33 bar ...

Well the above wasnt supposed to be an actionable dive plan, only the illustration that even if you assume fairly unreasonable parameters, the amount of gas required will still be huge. Hence the large number of cylinders...

Regarding the wing, if you look at Sebastians pictures carefully, you can see that the third bottle on his back (20L I think), connects to his giant wing.

What is wrong for having tanks staged at various depth? Cave divers have been doing that for deep exploration/penetration!

UPDATED: Link to the website article in Polish added

One of the websites stipulates, that he couldn't reach the entagled line to cut it off with the cutting device/knife. Makes sense looking at the amount of stage bottles he had around him.

Sebastian Marczewski zszedł tak głęboko, jak nikt inny dotąd. Nie wrócił. Jezioro zatrzymało go dla siebie

What is also interesting, it says that the CCR diver who went down to 100m was not a "support" per se, but a "checking diver" - he went down 1 hour and 40 minutes after Sebastian started submerging. So, the 200m diver that was missing, was most likely also not supposed to sit there for an hour but to go down and check at a predetermined time. Might not have been able to help if Sebastian was already passed out by the time he gets there. Just my speculation.
