He had recently set new records of 233 meters, then 249 meters: Wacław Lejko | Divers24.pl

Original news story: Sub muore tentando record di profondità Recuperato il corpo

Update of 23.40 - The body of the unlucky diver was recovered thanks to the underwater robot of the Volunteers of Garda during the search operations conducted in synergy with the Coast Guard.

Another tragedy in the waters of Lake Garda. This morning he disappeared during a dive in front of Tremosine, in Bresciano, a 38 year old underwater instructor, Waclaw Lejko. The sportsman was well-known in Poland, his country of origin, where he was considered a true champion of diving.

The foreign champion had plunged in the morning together with other colleagues who, however, had remained a few tens of meters below the surface, trying to establish the record of diving in Poland. "The young man, along with three compatriots, one of whom remained on the dinghy and two on the water, wanted to dive to 275 meters deep," as the Coast Guard said.

After plunging into the water, the Polish is no longer reminiscent. The athletes then gave the alarm, and in front of Tremosine, besides the Coast Guard at the orders of Commander Sandy Ballis, the Fire Brigade of Trento arrived with a boat and volunteers from Garda, who were entrusted with the research under the water of the dispersed. In the evening the body was located at about 230 meters deep and recuperation of the body began.

That ended like most depth record chasers eventually end. Very few exceptions historically.
RIP

I suppose he was building up to shoot for the world record, which I think stands at 332.35 m (1,090 ft 4.5 in) by Egyptian Ahmed Gabr in 2014. Dr. Guy Garman tried for 1,200 feet/365.76 meters in 2015 but did not survive. Lake Garda has a maximum depth reportedly of 346 m (1,135 ft), if that deepest spot could be located.

Chasing numbers and the result not shocking. No deep support on a challenging dive further highlight the lack of planning and understanding to attempt such a dive.

How's Ahmed doing nowadays?
